Description

Rainer Linz’s radio compositions date from 1982, with a series of broadcast pieces inviting audience members to participate within talkback, exercise and quiz show formats. The Opera “Crossed Purposes” similarly uses a range of media-related devices, including a radio ‘format’ (in place of an opera ‘form’) and the use of an announcer. These carry the action forward as the opera’s heroine challenges an oppressive authoritarian regime…

In The Rehearsal , three (fictional) cellists rehearse for a radio concert which is to be broadcast simultaneously from different parts of the world. The process of creating for radio is the starting point for this piece, as producers’ and engineers’ voices are heard and the sound of tape machines, microphones, tuning and studio atmosphere provide a quasi-documentary basis for the piece.

With Irene Cassimatis, Anthony Briggs, Friedrich Gauwerky , Julia Ryder & Christian Wojtowicz.
